Data retention and deletion
How long every kind of data lasts at Nampa, and what deleted actually means here.
The short version: notes last until one listen and one replay, or 24 hours if unplayed. Everything else has a fixed limit, and nothing is kept just in case.
How long things last
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Voice note audio | Until the replay ends. If nobody plays it, 24 hours after it was sent. |
| Note key | Deleted at the same moment as the note. |
| Notes on your phone | Played from memory and never saved to your phone. |
| Delivery records | 30 days, then deleted. |
| Account details | While your account is open. Deleted within 30 days after you delete it. |
| Invite records | While either account involved exists, then deleted within 30 days. |
| Reports and decisions | One year after the case closes, unless the law requires longer. |
| Removed accounts | A scrambled form of the phone number for two years, so the person can't simply sign up again. |
| Backups | Replaced within 30 days. |
| This website | Nothing. No logs, no cookies, no analytics. |
How deletion works
Every note is encrypted with its own key. When a note ends we delete the key and the encrypted audio. Even if a copy of the audio were sitting in a backup, without its key it's just noise that no one can play.
No archive by default
Nampa doesn't keep your notes, and there's no archive to switch off. If we ever add a way to keep a note, it will be off unless both people choose it, and this page will say exactly how it works before it ships.
Deleting your account
Go to Settings and choose Delete account. You're signed out straight away, any notes you sent that are still waiting are deleted, and the rest of your information is gone within 30 days.
When the law asks us to keep something
Sometimes the law requires us to keep specific records longer, for example a report about child exploitation. When that happens we keep only what's required, only for as long as it's required. This never includes notes that have already ended.
