Privacy policy

What we collect, why we need it, and what we never do with it. Written to be read, not scrolled past.

Last updated 2 October 2026. These policies take effect when the Nampa app launches. Until then they describe how we are building it.

The short version: we keep as little as we can. Voice notes are encrypted on the sender's device. Nampa stores encrypted audio and is designed so our systems cannot play your private notes. Notes are deleted after one listen and one replay, or after 24 hours if nobody plays them. We never transcribe your voice, we don't sell data, and we don't build a profile of you.

Who we are

Nampa makes the Nampa app and this website. When this policy says "we" or "us", it means Nampa. If you have a question about anything here, write to hello@nampa.app and a person will answer.

What we collect

Only what it takes to deliver a voice note to the right person and keep people safe.

WhatWhy we need it
Phone numberTo create your account and sign you in with a one time code.
Name and photoSo the people you talk to know it's you. You choose them and can change them any time.
Date of birthTo make sure you're old enough to use Nampa. We don't show it to anyone.
Invite recordsWho invited you and who you invited. This is what keeps invites traceable.
Voice notesEncrypted on your phone before upload. We hold the encrypted audio only until the note ends.
Note keysHeld by a separate key service so the person you sent it to can open it. Deleted when the note ends.
Delivery recordsWho sent a note to whom and when, never the audio. Used to deliver notes and to fight spam and abuse.
Device detailsApp version, operating system and a notification token, so notes can reach you.
ReportsIf you report someone, the note you reported and anything you tell us about it.

What we never do

  • We never transcribe your voice into text, for any reason.
  • We never analyse your tone, mood or emotions.
  • We never use your voice or your notes to train any model.
  • We never sell or rent your data, and we don't build an advertising profile of you.
  • We never track you across other apps or websites.
  • We never keep an archive of your notes.

Your contacts

If you allow it, the app checks your address book for friends who are already on Nampa. Phone numbers are hashed on your phone before they're compared, and we don't store your address book. You can say no and still use everything else.

Your voice key

The voice key is optional. You read a short phrase three times, your phone turns those readings into a voiceprint, and the voiceprint stays in your phone's secure enclave. The recordings are thrown away. We only learn that enrolment worked, which is what lets us show a blue tick.

Why we're allowed to use it

We use your information to run Nampa for you, to keep people safe from abuse, to fix things when they break, and to follow the law. Where the law asks us to name a reason, we rely on:

  • Our agreement with you, to deliver your notes and run your account.
  • Keeping Nampa safe, for delivery records, reports and stopping spam.
  • Your permission, for your microphone, your contacts and your voice key. You can take it back in your phone's settings.
  • Legal duties, when a law requires us to keep or share something.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of companies to run Nampa: cloud hosting and storage, the service that sends sign in codes by text message, and Apple and Google for notifications. They only get what they need to do that job, under contracts that stop them using it for anything else.

We share information with police or government agencies only as our law enforcement policy describes. If Nampa is ever sold or merged, we'll tell you before your information moves and before any different policy applies.

How long we keep it

Not long. Notes end, keys are deleted with them, and everything else has a clear limit. The data retention policy lists every type of data and exactly how long it lasts.

Your choices and rights

Wherever you live, you can:

  • Ask for a copy of the information we hold about your account.
  • Correct your name, photo or phone number in the app.
  • Delete your account from Settings at any time.
  • Take back permission for your microphone, contacts or voice key.
  • Object to how we use your information, or complain to your local data protection authority.

Write to hello@nampa.app for anything you can't do in the app. We'll answer within 30 days.

This website

nampa.app sets no cookies and runs no analytics or ad trackers. Our fonts are hosted by us, so your address never reaches a font company.

The sky behind the page is drawn for where you are. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, works out your approximate location from your connection. We round it to about 5 km and use it to ask MET Norway and Open-Meteo for the weather there. If you allow precise location, we round it to about 1 km and use it the same way. We don't log or store either.

When you use Try it, the recording stays in that browser tab. It's never uploaded, and it's deleted after the replay.

Children

Nampa is for people aged 16 and over. If we learn that someone younger has an account, we close it and delete their information. Our child safety policy explains how.

Where your data is stored

Our providers may store information in other countries. When they do, we use contracts that protect it to the standard this policy describes.

Changes to this policy

If we make a meaningful change, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. The date at the top of this page always shows the latest version.
